Note from Kimberly

August: the February of summer, intense with heat and the ever changing weather; holding the energy of folks enjoying the last of the Sun, and the freedom and joy of being outside.

August: a month of transition. A month to allow for slow and quiet reflection, and the restoration the body needs before we walk into the season of chaos the end of the year brings to many.

August: symbolic of a new season of life that is approaching.

August has brought me transition as well as the gift of embodiment: the embodiment of environment is everything. I’ve always known that one’s environment is a place to flourish, be stagnant, or be depleted. In the beginning of August, I left an environment that depleted me, but I was not aware of the effects until I changed the environment. Upon leaving, I immediately felt this great sense of joy; I felt inspired and expansive. I understood, on a cellular level, what it meant that environment is everything. I have found myself truly resting, feeling my nervous system settle, and receiving energy, inspiration, and joy I forgot existed in my daily life.

May August be an invitation to reflect on environments that you have the ability change, so that you may flourish.

• Taegeukseon (Korean Fan)

  • This particular Taegeukseon (shown above) dates from the Choson period around 1900. I grew up with these fans adorning my childhood home. Until now, I never knew what the symbols represented or how they were used. Taegeukseon is designed with the Taegeuk symbol (red and blue), which represents the “supreme ultimate” or “great polarity” painted in a continuous circle alongside the color yellow; these three colors together represent cosmic balance. Traditionally, these fans are made on Hanji paper.

• Artist Danielle Mckinney, Hold your Breath, 2024

  • The way artist Danielle Mckinney captures the essence of women in her portraits is captivating. Her use of color and the mood that she captures all feel hauntingly familiar. I highly recommend taking a few moments to look at her work. It was hard for me to choose just one to showcase in the edit; here are a few more pieces of her work.

  • In Korean culture, the red-crowned crane symbolizes longevity, purity, nobility, and peace. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate the artist for this piece.

I fell in love with this town in Upstate New York. My intentions before going there were…

1. go to Pocketbook Hudson and

2. go to Pocketbook Hudson 😂

Heheh, jokes aside, I was able to spend a little weekend with a dear friend who was in town visiting. I was in absolute heaven and was CHARMED to my core with Hudson. Warren Street is filled with storefront after storefront of either an antique or design-related shop, vintage stores, or charming provisions shops, all of which lead to the water of the Hudson River. I wanted to pop into all of them (next time). I was pleasantly surprised by the number of Japanese designers and influences showcased in many of the stores we popped into. While we were roaming Warren Street, I dragged my friend into The Maker to see the interiors, and all I can say is perfection (one day I must stay there). The Maker is a boutique hotel perfectly curated with globally sourced vintage objects and a blend of design eras, which creates a space with the soul of an artist. (oh, and their candles were divine…The Artist was my absolute favorite!)

_{Fun fact…Hudson was a whaling town (hence all of the whale ornaments and decor all throughout town).}

The vast blue skies of Hudson, The Maker, the Pocketbook Hudson, Japanese designers, and a trip to the Storm King Art Center, where I sat on Noguchi’s Momo Taro, inspired the curation below. Did I mention the Pocketbook Hudson? The left side of the moodboard is one of The Maker’s signature wallpapers.

  • she cute! In Common With always comes through with their lighting.

• Helen Frankenthaler -Moontide, 1968

  • I went to her show at the Gagosian gallery in Manhattan, and I immediately fell in love with her work. I can’t describe how beautiful the colors she created are in real life!

    My love for the arts and interiors roots from moments like this. When my soul can absolutely feel the colors, the space, the sound, the emotions…it’s as though I feel a part of that person in that moment…a piece of their soul was left in their art.

• Murano Glass Up Down Sconce

  • Who doesn’t love some color, especially after years of monotone palettes? I find these sconces to be oh so lovely. A perfect blend of whimsical and sophistication. In Common With just keeps giving!

• CoCollaborations Hudson (ceramics):

  • Artist Sadam Yoshinaga created these one-of-a-kind ceramics for his solo show. Currently, they are in-store only, but the owner, Coco Masuda, said they will be putting them on their website in the very near future.

• Noguchi, The Stone Within, 1982. Made from Basalt.

• Lanvin 100mm Satin Mule Pumps

  • I just love these pumps, especially the shape of the heel, and the best part…they are on sale!

• Bunzaburo black and white top.

  • The photo of this top does not do it justice. The CoCollaborations Hudson store had a large curation of their pieces. Please check out the site to see how interesting they look on a body. Plus, their bags and other accessories are so fun! (Please, I need more interesting…I can’t handle any more homogeneous styles I keep seeing everywhere. I know I tend to lean in that group, but my eyes thirst for interesting and inspiring.)

• PocketBook Hudson.

  • This hotel was a VIBE! Few designers and hospitality groups have a gift for creating an unspoken, effortless, vibey energy in their spaces without trying so hard! This hotel is hands down one of those places. A historical textile factory turned into a hub for creatives in the sweet town of Hudson.

    My entire goal while in Hudson was to check out the interiors of this space, and it did not disappoint. I mean, look at their bathroom (photo under the ceramic bowls)! Lots of shopping, art, and dancing to be had at Pocketbook Hudson, as well as the recently opened Baths, which I cannot wait to spend a couple of hours in next time I am in Hudson. Who’s coming with me?

    Not to be missed on the second level is KASURI. From their website: “Located in Hudson, NY, a historic river town that serves as an artistic destination and escape for many New Yorkers — KASURI has been bringing cutting edge directional fashion to the Hudson Valley for over a decade. Now housed in an exquisitely renovated 6,000 square foot space on the second floor of the Pocketbook Hotel, the boutique offers a finely curated selection of Japanese, European, and American labels. With a sensibility firmly rooted in the avant-garde and staffed by a team passionately devoted to fashion, KASURI strives to create an environment where experimentation and tradition integrate in ever-evolving ways.”

• Sophie Buhai Tassel Keychain

  • I have a serious love for tassels! Ughhhh the keychains from The Hotel Chelsea and Chateau Marmont are oh so chic, and I have always wanted one. I found this sexy tassel keychain from Sophie Buhai. The drama…I love it.

I miss the ocean. The sea has always been the source of grounding and reset for me. Now I live in New York, which thankfully is surrounded by water, but it’s not quite the same. When I was creating this moodboard, I was craving the ocean air, the taste of the sea, and the feeling of sand stuck to your legs. I was craving how I feel every time I sit in front of the ocean and watch as she changes, builds, calms, lashes. The ocean has always cleansed my heart, washed my tears, brought me a sense of calm, and continuously humbles me.

If you haven’t heard of the Haenyeo divers, real-life mermaids of Korea, I would definitely recommend reading about their incredible history. These women of Jeju Island free-dive (no oxygen tanks), up to 20m deep, and can hold their breath for up to three minutes. The tradition is slowly fading as many of these women are in the second half of their lives. Day after day, for hours upon hours, they withstand all of the moods of the ocean only to bring up treasures like abalone, conchs, sea urchins, and more.

The haenyeo divers were an inspiration for the idea that life, like the ocean, is unpredictable. Life, like the ocean, can be serene, calm, the grounding nature one seeks, and then the very next moment, it can sweep you up and tumble you in the waves to the point where you don’t know which way is up. Life, like the ocean, becomes harder with resistance, like when you keep swimming in the riptide and not parallel to it. Yet, if we can freedive to the bottom of our mind where it is quiet, or if we flow with the currents of life, we can turn those unpredictable moments into treasures. We can come back to the surface with these treasures that can, in turn, help us grow even more, and ones that we can share with others.

There is so much beauty in the strength and resilience of these women. I hope one day soon I will be able to travel back to Korea and witness the strength and resilience of these real-life mermaids.

• If you know me, you know I love florals, and I especially have a very special relationship with Sunflowers. This was created by the incredible artist Madison Hartley.

• I love this chair and the color of the velvet by Orior. Their showroom was really inspiring here in NYC.

• More Missta. A dear friend introduced me to this brand, and I am obsessed. We bought these matching shoes (soooo cute), and they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.

• SANGRE de FRUTA! I wish I could have all of their products. A friend gifted me the Neroli Botanical Tonic spray, and I am absolutely obsessed. I found their products here in NY, and they all smell so beautiful, especially the scents Garden of Earthly Delights and Neroli (drool). You can feel and smell the care, intention, and quality of ingredients they use in their products.

• Frida...”You deserve a lover who takes away the lies, and brings you hope, coffee, and poetry.”

• OBIT by Victoria Chang is a book of poetry I recently purchased. Her writing...wow... sometimes it is hard for me to read because losing mom feels so new, but the way in which she writes is breathtaking.

• Lower background are tiles from Castelli Marble. A mix Durango and Red Onyx tumbled. (I am always drawn to Durango lol)
